5G Dashboard: The Race is On
The race for 5G is in full swing and wireless carriers are working fast and furious to deploy the next generation of wireless technology, touting their progress continuously along the way. Not a day goes by without AT&T or Verizon issuing a press release hyping their latest 5G milestone. With all the noise in the daily news cycle, it can be difficult to keep track of what actual progress has been made. The below chart provides a quick summary of the major providers’ 5G progress to date and their outlook for 2019 and beyond.
The takeaway: we are still in the first paces of a marathon. AT&T and Verizon recently announced that they turned up 5G in limited portions of their networks in selected cities, but it will be several months—perhaps well into 2020—before the carriers have prepped their networks to deploy nationwide. Also a gating factor, handset/hardware ecosystems historically lag behind network deployment during technology upgrades as we experienced during the 3G to 4G transition.
